Spring into Rowing: Understanding Common Home Rowing Machine Terms

🌱 As spring weather blooms, our thoughts may turn to water sports like rowing! 🚣‍♂️

Rowing offers a fantastic full-body workout suitable for people of all fitness levels. While rowing outdoors is enjoyable, it isn’t always practical. Indoor rowing machines provide a great alternative. These indoor fitness rowing machines are typically equipped with consoles that display your workout metrics in real-time.

If you’re new to rowing, the terminology on these consoles might seem a bit confusing at first. Don’t worry – we’re here to help! Below, we break down some common rowing terms to help you better understand your workout.

SPM (Strokes Per Minute)

SPM refers to the number of strokes you complete in one minute. It’s a measure of how fast you’re rowing. Adjusting your SPM can help you control the intensity of your workout and tailor it to your fitness goals.

Splits

In rowing, a “split” indicates how long it would take you to row 500 meters if you continued at your current pace. For example, a 2:00 split means it would take you 2 minutes to row 500 meters. Monitoring your splits can help you track your progress and challenge yourself during each workout.

Output

Output measures the total work you’ve done during your rowing session. It’s calculated based on the resistance level, speed, and duration of your workout. A higher output means a more intense and effective workout, helping you achieve your fitness goals faster.

Watts

Watts measure your power output while rowing. It’s a combination of your speed and the resistance level. Increasing your watts can help you build strength and endurance, making your rowing workouts more challenging and rewarding.
